For me, although there is a fine element of surprise to be enjoyed with a film
that hasn't bared any scrutiny since it might be a new release, most of the
time those occassions are few. Meanwhile, I've come to appreciate the
commentaries of respected critics who communicate enough details so that I can
decide whether a certain film is a waste of time and money or not.

Over time, I have found that Leonard Maltin does a very good job describing the
pluses and minuses of a film. From that, I can decide if it I want to try
it.His "ratings" have been quite consistent with my opinions too.
