Hi Daryl!

BM>That's good on the recovery. I've reduced the lockups, though LISB4
BM>they're random and don't seem to have a trigger. Think I'll do a New
BM>Year's Resolution and put together the new system. As I've been telling
BM>Nancy, other little But First projects keep popping up, and getting the
BM>new system up and running is a series of projects itself: reorganization
BM>of the data (information I keep. not the data the computer uses), etc.
DS> I really liked Windows XP (was originally reluctant to upgrade
 DS> from 98)...but I like Windows 7 32-bit better. However, I'm not
DS> going any higher...I've heard too many horror stories, as it
 DS> were, with Windows 8 and 10.

Right. It's like reading reviews when considering buying a product.
Somebody will always think it's the greatest thing, somebody else will
post it's garbage. I usually look at the low ones to see what potential
problems I could run in to and scan through the rest for any tips and
considerations.

BM>Like you I have some experience with viruses, ruses, scareware, and the
BM>like. (I highly doubt my lockup issues are due to one.) Usualy an easy
BM>fix to close out; have disconnected network and USB cables on occasion
 BM>to help isolate.  I also rarely "click this link" on e-mails I trust;
BM>received an e-mail my monthly statement was available. Instead of
 BM>clicking went in manually.
DS> I get a notice that my statement is available, then just zap
DS> it...and go direct to the site to download it. I have to provide
DS> 6 months of statements when I do my yearly rent recertification.
DS> All the medical bills helps me get a lower rent, instead of full
DS> market rate. Basically, when I barely get $1100 a month on
DS> disability (you can't really survive on that), $250 a month rent
DS> is a lot better than nearly $700 a month rent.

I'll agree!

BM>"Gee, so what does 'Spin Out of Control' do?". And they will do it
 BM>"just to see it done".
DS> For some people in life, they believe "rules are made to be
 DS> broken"...they have no respect for someone else's property...and
DS> they're not happy, unless they make everyone else's life
 DS> miserable.

Unfortunately right. I'm not so sure they do it for the misery of
others but that's not the point: they do something they shouldn't. When
I was working in the computer department at the store years ago
computers were still a novelty to the general public. Had them on
display and working, some smart-rump would come along and type one of
the commands which would screw up the data on the drive. Don't think it
was done specifically at us, just to do it - a form of bullying.

(After several instances and re-installs I proposed and got approved
where I remapped a few of the keys: DEL would type as DWL and do nothing
except frustrate the wannabe nuisance.)

BM>If it's doing the same on your mother's computer than probaly a 'quirk'
BM>of Chrome, though as you were probably the cone to configure might be
BM>something you did. (BTDT here with a friend's computer.)
 DS> I think it's Chrome...but I'm to the point where I don't really
DS> want to learn anything with a steep learning curve...although
DS> I've learned quite a bit over the years with BBS software, doors,
 DS> utilities, etc.

When it bugs you enough you'll change!

BM> DS> Updates: Remove old bugs, insert new ones. <G>
BM><chuckle> Pretty much. I do think Linux is better than Microsoft but
BM>no where near a perfect score.
DS> No OS is perfect...not in this lifetime. Hackers, bots,
DS> scammers, etc. want to steal data, funds, identities, etc. All
DS> these think of is themselves, and "to hell with everyone else".

Just automated versions of those humans being nuisances. ...I saw an
HTML command which was was supposed to tell the bots not to go further.
Neat!! ...Wait a minute: that's like a stop sign at an intersection.
One is supposed to stop, just because the stop sign says so, but what's
really doing the stopping? Same with the HJTML command. Seems
relatively easy to install a "just keep going" code.

... Don't let the past hold you back, you're missing the good stuff.
