True, open source projects show a passion for the art, which is important. I def
initely mention open source projects, but only in vague terms. If they want spec
ifics (and the normally don't), then I would name names. Sometimes they just wan
t to take a peek at your github (or even sourceforge) activity.

It's certainly relevant to a lot of pertinent work, but I wouldn't want someone 
randomly opening a source file and judging my skills/style based on it. Some of 
that code is nearly 30 years old and not something I feel is a good example of m
y current skills or style. And of course, I didn't write all of it myself.
