There is a jump to a more purposeful afterlife by getting baptized in the way
that Jesus Christ authorizes. If you keep the covenant that you make with God
through baptism, which involves keeping a deeper level of commandments as
described in the New Testament, you can be involved in the work that God is
doing.
If you have read your bible, you will remember that John the beloved asked to
teach others about Christ until he came to earth again. His request was in
contrast to the other apostles, who asked to be taken back to Christ after a
long life (maybe 70 years?). Jesus said John asked for a more blessed thing and
for such people there will be a more blessed afterlife reward. It is probably
the difference between being a high-level leader as opposed to being the person
who picks up the litter or washes the dishes. Both jobs are necessary and
honorable and by our willingness to do more for God, we show him that he can
trust us with more, just like those guys in the parable of the talents.
It seems there is a big organization in God's heaven and you can do work here
on earth to earn more trusted positions in your afterlife. Yes, it is just
more work to do, but God is a busy person that needs workers and he rewards
those that do work for him.
There is an even better end that you can pursue, but that will have to wait for
another time...
