I would like to see a SHOT show eventually, however the dealers I know who
get tickets already have a list of buddies trying to get a spare ticket.

The NRAAM in Indy is the closest to me. Last year the conservation club I
belong to scheduled a bus trip. The convention also has several displays or
booths that aren't sales related, such as historic collections on display.
I haven't stuck around for the concerts or auctions, but those are other
activities that would make it worth it the stay or visit for a few days.
