Hi Daryl Part III!
DS> In some areas, the railroad has sold, or donated the old
DS> station to the city. Some of the depots have been restored, and
DS> are still used as
DS> train stations...while others are used as offices for the
DS> railroad (no passenger service), or now have other businesses.
DS> The former Rock Island Railroad Station in Lonoke, Arkansas
DS> (about 25 miles east of Little Rock) is now the town's Chamber Of Commerce.
DS> The former Atlantic Coastline Depot in Arcadia, Florida
DS> (near Fort Myers) is used by several businesses...none of them
DS> railway related.
I sort of prefer the repurposing but do understand why sometimes too far
gone and overall better to give up on the old, though there's still a
fairly large part of me saying "nooooooo!!". (I've sort of would like
to live in a smaller school building, etc., because of the large rooms
but then the heating and air conditioning would be a nightmare, plus
other issues.)
DS> Tracks do still exist beside some of the stations, but with
DS> others, the tracks were taken up long ago. Train order boards
DS> (signals) still stand guard, for "trains that will never pass
DS> that way again".
Lots of interesting history out there!
BM>The terminal in Moline (IL) - diagonally upstream from Davenport --
BM>Rock Island is across the Mississippi River from Davenport - I think has
BM>been moved. It fell into disrepair because of not being used, then
BM>saved and started to be repaired and then was in the path of a major
BM>construction project but it's too far south to be in the way of the new
BM>I-74 Bridge. IIRC the terminal was declared a historic site and moved
BM>-- want to say to the Western Illinois University Quad City Campus.
BM>...Need to check (but first!!).
DS> Several depots have been relocated to different locations.
I'm not all that much into history but do find it interesting to know
the overall information on stuff. Tangent to the repurposing of the
train terminals, was at my insurance agents' office about a month ago
(plural apostrophe is correct - specialized agents) and was chatting
with the one of the secretaries about their recent purchase of the
building next door for other agents. The building was a hair salon and
she was commenting how dirty it was and somehow its construction came
up. I commented before being a hair salon it had been a 7-11; a light
goes off as she puts two and two together: being a former conveience
store started to explain some 'construction oddities' to her. (And
oddly the main building we were in used to be a dine-in pizza place.)

... If history repeats itself, I think we can expect the same thing again.
