I've found that when they do the "howl" mine usually have a toy mouse or
something.  My GF said they are "hunting" and caught something and want to
announce to you that they are bringing you their prize.  I usually go pick up
the toy praise the kitty put them on the bed with me and they usually (operative
word is usually) are quiet the rest of the night.

Now the day that it was freezing cold and somehow a mouse got in here I reached
down to pick up her prize and it was warm, squishy and wet.  That night I don't
think any of us slept very well.
