I think Telnet is used most, but it may vary from one BBS to another. Due to the
 nature of web browsers (creating multiple HTTP connections per page request) an
d modern Web UI maintaining sessions, it may appear that there's more HTTP/HTTPS
 use of a Synchronet system, but gauging by the posted *content* (e.g. messages)
 on a BBS, they mostly come in via Telnet. Still, many of those may come via the
 web sockets proxy to Telnet, which would mean the end user is actually use a we
b browser.
