The underlying font format is just bitmap CGA font data, each byte is a row of c
har/glyph data since the character cells are 8-pixels wide. Fonts can be either
8, 14, or 16 rows high however, so the number of bytes that make up a complete c
har/glyph depends on the target video mode.
