I don't know about anything coming with Windows (much less 7) but Belarc Advisor
might be a good tool -- takes a few minutes for it to collect
its data and on my old XP the progress bar stopped for several seconds. Saying
that so you don't think something is wrong.
If part of the complaint is the browser is slow power booting the
gateway might be the fix. At least for DSL. Here I've seen nothing in
the gateway's statistics to indicate it is having problems: memory usage
is always about half whether just rebooted and communication is running
fast or has been running for a month and things getting sluggish.
I would definitely take a look at the Performance tab in Task Manager.
CPU usage abnormally high? DOS programmes under XP seem to pin the CPU
Usage to 100%. (I get spikes when the screensaver for the BBS's window shifts.
Running the 'snake' screensaver for Wildcat! pinned CPU usage
to 100%.)
And of course while in Performance check memory usage -- is it swapping
out all the time? That will slow things down.
