"Vim" stands for "vi improved" - it's kind of the modern successor to 'vi' (the
original "visual" text editor for Unix). The version of vim installed by default
on Debian Linux (and I assume Ubuntu Linux) is "vim-tiny" (a minimal install wi
th a subset of features) and you'll want to install the 'vim' package to get the
normal/full set of vi/vim features.
Neovim is another variant of 'vi' that's popular (I assume there are others).
