Hehe - 1200 Baud? You speedy racer -
if you want a real patience test,
log in to the snail mail Snobsoft
at 300 Baud:

telnet://snobsoft.de:6401.

No, seriously, of course, you could
and can exchange information with
300 Baud. Back in 1985, at least
here in Germany, we had in BBS no
user registration with 1000
questions, because you could usually
start right away as a guest
(currently also in the above
Snobsoft). Well, and the usual
advantages that also applied to
later 90s BBS - no popups, no ads,
no annoying "modern" stuff, and no
censorship, or even a house search
just because you make some crude
jokes about politicians (compare
the CBS documentary about "freedom
of speech" in Germany today, which
is currently causing a stir
worldwide).
In short - some things were better
back then.

I believe there was already modem
swapping in mid 80s, even across the big pond for C64 games, for example. You ha
d to have patience and someone
else who paid the extremely high
phone bill :D But good hackers
could achieve such things back
then.
