i was only familiar with acoustic couplers because my friend's parents were deaf
and they had a TTY device that worked like that. you'd unhook the phone and set
it on the device and then dial the number of the relay service, and the relay
service in turn would call voice to whoever you were trying to contact and relay
the messages by typing them out to you.

it's particularly funny when you and your friends have gotten in trouble and the
relay person has to say "don't call again, ever, <name> is grounded! you're a
bad influence!" and then they have to tell you the other party hung up lol

but anyway, it was fairly portable, in the sense that if you had to, you could
lol. so if you went on vacation you could bring it and use it with any phone
that was available.

apparently the older modems used them out of necessity.. the phone co said you
couldn't connect directly to the lines. weird.
