I went on hiatus from 2000 to 2004 or so, and ran a mail-only BBS. I
needed the phone line for my business. When I went to a telnettable BBS,
I invited my callers to try it out.
Some did, called a couple of times, then stopped. Another said he didn't
want to call because of "momentum". BBSes were a huge part of our lives,
and it became a part of our days. After being away, other things
replaced them, and restarting a hobby wasn't the same.
I didn't feel the same way, obviously. :)
For me, the technical bits and bobs held an allure. Making it all work
together was a challenge. Then, discovering Synchronet and being able to
run a mail server, web server, telnet BBS, FTP server and news server on
a cast-off Celeron PC sitting in the corner was another facet of the allure.
