Hi Nigel!

NR> Sounds like you need a UPS for your UPS :)
More UPSs, spreading the load, will also last longer.
NR> I forgot what sort of internet you have these days, if it's fiber
NR> then your ONT is going to need to be on its own UPS. Mine came
NR> with one but the batteries are long dead. I should replace them.
NR> I have my computer, monitor, router, and switch all on a UPS

NR> at the house.
Most of my UPSs use the same battery type (RBC17 equivalent -- 12v, 9
AH) so I can keep spares on hand and swap in when needed rather than
rushing down to BatteriesPlus (where when I checked a few years ago only
sold the 7 AH version - won't last quite as long).
As for the ONT, mine is on the UPS in the basement which is the backup
for the NAS and a couple other things. If have telephone service
through a non-Bell provider (so fiber and cable) that should be on its
own backup just so lasts as long as possible. The unit I have is a 12v battery
just like my spares (yea!) and probably mostly a buck/boost
regulator ==> running from 12vDC battery to 120VAC output only to be
taken back down to 12v DC by the wall wart is highly inefficient, so
being powered essentially directly by the battery creates a
significanlty longer run-time -- like 24 hours instead of 45 minutes.
NR> I was thinking of getting Frontier Business FiOS and bring it in
NR> house. I'd have a lot more disk space, I'd be not paying for a
NR> VPS (though it's cheap), but it would be susceptible to power
NR> outages, hardware failures, disk crashes etc.
Believe it or not I don't know that much about that stuff! If lots of
power outages I'd be thinking a whole house generator -- most of the
little portable ones have a problem with outputting spikes and otherwise 'dirty'
power which will destroy electronics. There's electronics in
the furnace, the refrigerator.....
