Found some information to update this thread:

Was looking around trying to figure out why I'm having Desktop lockups
but the mouse still moves over and Pithos still plays. (Newer issue
here -- appears is a problem that has been around for years over
multiple versions.) Anyway, found Ubuntu disables many of the magic
sysrq key combinations by default. (That ought to give Ky some more
ammunition!!)
Appears there might be some other options -- haven't tried as
fortunately no lockups to try on -- yet. Take a look at (and probably
print out!!) at https://askubuntu.com/questions/783501/what-do-i-do-
