Compact .380's tend to be snappy because they are usually blow back actions.
When you get into a 9mm or larger, they can be what is called a delayed
blowback, in which there's a stage that prevents the slide from flying back
for a fraction of a second. The delay also helps smooth out the recoil
impulse.
