I think the star changes were done in the 1980's video tape box set release.
It's had a lot of enhancement through the years.  The origional had the most
unconvincing explosion of the death star ever, that was one of the first
corrections in the 1980's when the digital effects got better... before that the
explosions were on par with Battlestar Galactica which I think may have gotten a
clean up in the 2000's when the Ron Moore reboot happened.

The effects on the first star wars were primitive and they have spent a lot of
money through the years to make it better.

The first movie with really kick ass space CGI was The Last Starfighter, one
of my favorites.
