Stop the Windows Update service (WUAUSERV) and delete the contents of
\Windows\SoftwareDistribution.
It might actually be preferrable to set the Windows Update service to
Disabled, and then only re-enable the service if and when you decide to install
the updates.
Always do a full backup before installing ANY update.
