Not really risky, the R5-3600 is a decent performer and noticeably 
faster depending on what you're coming from...  I had used an R6-3600 as 
a placeholder for a system while waiting for a 3950X and it was 
significantly faster than my older I7-4790K at that point.

If you're thinking of something higher, an R5-5600 is roughly equal to 
an R7-3700x in performance, so depending on price, you may be better 
with current gen.  I would suggest getting an X570 series motherboard 
regardless, as the chipset and compatibility has improved a lot.
