To start is ok, but if you are a beginner, I strongly suggest to learn C first.
Don't become another "Java only" guy ;) open your mind and explore as much as
you can. Personally I think that Java is a decent programming language, but
what I don't really get is the overwhelming bloat of the J2EE world.
