I think people is not aware that Russians feel that, when the Soviet Union fell,
the NATO kept kicking them in the ribs while they were down and the URSS had al
ready declared defeat.
Ukraine is not THE problem as far as the Russian point of view is concerned. It
is the straw that broke the camel's back after decades of NATO undermining Russi
an interests, sometimes in very hostile and dirty ways.
To put it bluntly: how would US officials feel if California and Texas separated
from the Union but kept friendly relations with Washington, then Iran dragged t
hem both away from the US sphere of influence, and finally placed military bases
in them? No change in the US regime would change the fact Iran would be regarde
d as an enemy, alongside the politicians ruling formely friendly countries that
are now hostile.
