Hi Daryl!

BM>Quite familiar with the pole fuses blowing: used to hear it several
BM>times a summer because a critter would get too inquisitive with the
 BM>transformer.
DS> I saw one video where this bird was on top of some
DS> transformers. He did a fatal turn, and literally disintegrated
DS> into mid-air with the spark that was generated!!

I can believe it: nothing I'd want to see but can visualize. (I'd be
yelling at the bird to move away - carefully!)

BM>Yes, even though nice and quiet can hear everything, plus those nagging
BM>little concerns about will the battery-operated alarm go off, mentally
BM>making plans on how to shower by flashlight, etc. Well, that was when
 BM>working.
DS> I keep an extra light in the bathroom for other things as well. <G>

Checking the wax in your ears -- why is there a bright spot on the
wall?!

BM>Yup! Better off staying off the roads; maybe I know how to drive in
BM>those conditions but does the other driver?
DS> Or if you have a light weight car, it makes it more difficult.
DS> Either way, so many are in a hurry, and are not cautious...and
 DS> that leads to wrecks.

It seems many people driving SUVs and the truck styles think they can
power-through the situation: "I have monster car" -- still most obey the
Laws of Physics.

BM>To the best of my knowledge Linux is free for private use and there is a
BM>cost for business use but they also get support. May be wrong on the
BM>support part. Also don't know what size business.
DS> I know some who run it...but I've gotten so accustomed to
DS> Windows. But, this latest CPU chip flaw, affects EVERYTHING --
DS> Windows, Mac, Linus, smartphones, iPhones, etc. The fix will
DS> close the vulnerability, which made portions of the memory
DS> visible (they shouldn't be)...but it will also result in a
DS> slowing of the CPU speed. Now, those with huge servers (in the
DS> cloud or not)...such as Amazon, Microsoft, and Google...plus, all
DS> the gamers, will notice the most slowing up. Those who just do
DS> email, social media, and surfing "casually" probably won't notice
 DS> much of a slowdown.

I scanned through an article indicating the same. Sort of thinking of
the games but if everyone is one the same footing everything will be
even; the ones who chose speed over safety are vulnerable. ...Idon't
game, the fastest thing thing I do is stream and download, so worst case
may experience buffering. Also thinking the users (and providers) want
spped, so the made-quickly security patches are going to be replaced
with secure upgrades which return the speed.

DS> Folks are saying it'll slow down broadband to DSL (half the
DS> speed), and DSL to dial-up (I still remember those days). If
DS> there's any consolation on the BBS, it'll make a few of the fast
DS> paced games easier to play. <G>

The article I read stated a slowdown up to 30%; that could be rather
nasty for video streaming! ...Thinking all sorts of scenarios: Skype,
video conferencing, Netflix and the like streaming, local and national
news feeds.... A 1/3 slow-down would almost be devastating. Something
will be done to fix the fix.

BM>Anyway, I had been using the laptop as a monitor for my then-infant
BM>granddaughter. Periodically Microsoft wants an update, no, click X.
BM>Microsoft: update! Me: no! <click X> Well you know what happened:
BM>Microsoft decided to ignore their own rules and make clicking the 'x'
BM>close the window but also continue with the update. Didn't create too
BM>much of a problem here other that I had to reinstall the
BM>camera-monitoring software but others didn't get by as easily.
DS> That angered a lot of folks for sure.

I wasn't too happy about it: I said no, thanks for the offer but I have
my reasons.

BM>Keep an eye on your backups. I had Acronis here seems like eventually I
BM>had problems retrieving the backups; was years ago so possibly the issue
BM>has been resolved. Last backup software I was using with XP was AOEMI.
DS> I store at least 5 sets of backups, just in case...and try to
DS> do at least one a month, minimum...more if I can get a chance.

I also have multiple rotating backups. More or less from the floppy-
and tape days: what do you mean part 5 is damaged?!
