Nothing much running.

Apparently!!

If you look in low places for "XP SP3 MSDN Final" ... that's it.

I used to think that, but...

Only memory I've ever had come up bad was Kingston, and you can't get
more "namebrand" than that. -- I use whatever's cheap or falls on my
head, and have seen ZERO difference in reliability, and barely any in
performance (just tested DDR, Micron vs some johnny-come-lately brand
I'd never heard of, and the Micron performance was about 2% better --
this was raw hardware, no OS).

If you're number-crunching or it's a server, then error-correcting
memory may be required. If you're a gamer and every nanosecond counts,
then you can go specs-crazy. But for what we do, any stick that's handy
and works is good enough.

RAMBUS finally got cheap, so I took a notion to upgrade old Xorro
(originally the late Jerry Pournelle's "Regina"... couldn't bring myself
to pitch out a dual Xeon, even if it is 18 years old and weighs 70
pounds!) And lo and behold, someone is actually making it, it's not all
salvage. Never heard of 'em, but I'll wager $15 on a 1GB set... Xorro is
a fussy bugger and has not liked the stuff I got for free, even tho it's
to spec. Well, it likes this Brand X just fine, AND it runs a good 20
degrees cooler, which considering how hot RAMBUS gets is significant.
About 2% slower than the old Samsung sticks, which isn't a bad tradeoff.
-- Probably should get a second GB and max it out while it's still
available. Anyone need a really souped-up Win2K box? :D
