There's even an eight-bit DOS version of MM in addition to the OS/2,
Windows and maybe even Mac.

It can but the character codes are four digit numerical codes, not three
and not the same as for DOS and OS/2.

There was in fact a standard in the early days of Fidonet that set the
length of messages to a certain number of lines.
