Bill,

First, check to be sure your ISP isn't blocking port 23.

Second, if your system is being slammed by bots, consider changing to
a different telnet port, such as 2323...or using the CAPTCHA.V VScript
with Virtual Advanced, or Synchronet 3.17 (still in beta testing, but
available at ftp://vert.synchro.net/Synchronet/sbbs_dev.zip).

Note that you should have a full copy of Synchronet 3.16 installed
FIRST, before you go with this. I wasn't sure which software you were
running.

I switched over to Synchronet, due to numerous problems with the MSGID
parameter in VFIDO, the FIDONet tosser for Virtual Advanced. It
basically, was creating dupes, and the message postings, especially to
Synchronet systems, were being deleted.

I'm running SBBS 3.17 version myself. Also, consider using a program
such as Peer Block...this helps filter out connections from countries
with the bots. However, to get constant updated lists, you need to get a
subscription...I think it's either $10 a month, or $10 a year...I don't remember
which.

Also, I discovered that I could INCREASE the temporary ban of certain
IP addresses from the default of 10 minutes to 24 hours under Synchronet
3.17 -- with the variable of MaxConcurrentConnections=2 -- although that
does not apply to GUEST account logins.

Third, be sure that said port (whether 23 or otherwise), is OPEN in
your router. You may have it set up, but if it's NOT enabled, it might
as well not be there. I recently upgraded routers, and had to be sure
that I had all the settings right. If the port range is the same (i.e.
23), I have the range from 23 to 23 -- then I set it for BOTH (for both
TCP and UDP). I'm using 21 slots, for "all the services" that SBBS
offers.

Daryl
